POLICE are working to identify the body of a person hit by a train.
All railway lines between Brighton and Gatwick Airport were blocked on Thursday, April 21, after reports of a person having been struck by a train.
Emergency services attended the scene at Preston Park station at about 4.18pm.
British Transport Police confirmed that a person had died after being hit by a train at the station following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene,” a British Transport Police spokesman said.
“Officers are currently working to identify the deceased and establish the full circumstances behind their death.”
A Southern Rail spokesman previously said: “It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between Brighton and Gatwick Airport.
“All lines are blocked between these stations whilst the emergency services work to deal with this incident.
“Service information will follow.”
Tickets were also being accepted on alternative Southern and Thameslink routes, Brighton and Hove Buses on all routes and Metrobus on all routes.
