NEWLY installed picnic benches have been destroyed in a suspected arson attack.

Emergency services were called to Horsham Park in North Street, Horsham, at  2.48am on Monday.

A ten square metre area of grassland and park furniture was ablaze when fire crews arrived at the scene, a West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said.

She said the fire was believed to have been started deliberately.

Two fire engines from Horsham attended, along with Sussex Police.

Fire crews left the scene at 4am.

A spokesman from Horsham District Council said: “We are shocked and saddened by the fire in Horsham Park.

“Two newly installed picnic benches have been destroyed and others damaged.

“The rubber safety surfacing has also been damaged.

“We are working with Sussex Police and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to investigate.”

Local community group Friends Of Horsham Park said: “We are so very sad to see the fire damage to the picnic area in Horsham Park.

“The parks and countryside team at Horsham District Council did a fab job renovating this area. We do hope that this doesn't detract too much from your enjoyment of the park.”
