A STATE-of-the-art fitness and sports space is being installed in one of the city’s parks this summer.

The space, which can be used for a variety of sports, will be at Wild Park near Coldean Lane and Lewes Road in Brighton.

Brighton and Hove City Council will start the £300,000 work in June and should be finished by July this summer. The space will include two five-a-side football pitches, a basketball court, running track and a colourful “chill out area”.

There will also be durable fitness equipment close to the quality of “indoor fitness apparatus you’d find in a gym”. The games area is known as a “multi-use games area” (MUGA).

Councillor Amy Heley, co-chair of the environment, transport and sustainability committee said: “It’s very exciting to see this new equipment on the way.

“Alongside a new MUGA, fitness track and play area being installed at Carden Park, these are a highlight of one of the biggest investments in play and fitness equipment in the city for many years.

“Exercise and fresh air both play an important in helping us to lead healthy, sociable lifestyles.

“They’re essential for our well-being and mental health and the new fitness area and MUGA at Wild Park will provide residents with a fantastic opportunity to get to grips with some of the best outdoor gym equipment available.

“With the summer months on the way, these new areas will provide a fantastic opportunity to get out in the fresh air, meet up with friends and enjoy the chance to get active whatever your level.”

The team at CityParks has been working closely with the Moulsecoomb local action team to ensure people have had their say on the development which will be accessible to everyone.

The chosen supplier, Kompan, will be hosting a number of fitness sessions, showing people how to use the equipment. These will be arranged, once the equipment has been installed, and advertised when available.

The work comes as part of the council's £3 million investment into 45 play areas within the next three years. 23 of these are set to be completed by July 2022.
