NEW food hygiene ratings have been awarded to restaurants and takeaways across the city.

Dozens of restaurants, pubs, bars, nightclubs and food outlets in Brighton and Hove have had their inspection results listed on the Food Standards Agency’s website.

What do the numbers mean?

• Zero – Urgent improvement necessary. There is one outlet with this rating.

• One – Major improvements necessary. There are 35 outlets with this rating.

• Two – Improvements necessary. There are 29 outlets with this rating.

• Three – Generally satisfactory. There are 127 outlets with this rating.

• Four – Good on assessment. There are 460 outlets with this rating.

• Five – Seen as very good. There are 2,000 outlets with this rating.

The following outlets received a rating of five:

• Gail's, Church Road, Hove, rated on May 3

• Pesca, Church Road, Hove, rated on April 21

• One Bread Café, All Saints Church, Eaton Road, Hove, rated on April 20

The following outlets received a rating of two:

• The Big Cheese Brighton, Preston Street, Brighton, rated on April 7

• Nord, Cranbourne Street, Brighton, rated on April 6

Nord and The Big Cheese have both been told to make improvements to the cleanliness and condition of their facilities.

This includes having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

Food safety officers found both venues to be generally satisfactory in their hygienic food handling and to the management of food safety.

Businesses which are given low ratings of zero or one must make urgent or major improvements to hygiene standards.

The local authority food safety officer has several enforcement options available and gives advice and guidance to make sure these improvements are made.

The food safety officer will also tell the business how quickly these improvements must be made and this will depend on the type of issue that needs to be addressed
