Argus readers reveal biggest problems in Brighton that need fixing next

From paddling in the sea at low tide to rummaging around vintage shops in North Laine, Brighton is, in many ways, the perfect place to live.

But as the old saying goes, there is no such thing as perfection.

So, we asked Argus readers what they think is the biggest problem in Brighton and Hove that needs fixing next.

More than 600 people got in touch with us to voice their biggest concerns – and these were the most common responses.

Housing

Some readers believe the city needs more affordable housing to accommodate the city’s rough sleepers.

Amberjaye Prince said: “Make more housing for homeless people and get them off the streets.

“No one should be treated like that. Not even animals live like that.”

Many readers said they had noticed an increase in student accommodation popping up around they city, which the say is spoiling our heritage.

Elaine Mccullock said: “There is too much student accommodations, which many students cannot afford to live in, and there is not enough council housing for people who live and work here.”

Harrison Taz Martin agreed, adding that Airbnb accommodation in the city was also a problem.

He wrote: “Too much student accommodation and too many Airbnbs.

“There is not enough affordable housing for locals and the streets are filthy.”

The cost of renting property in the city was also a commonly mentioned issue.

Reader Emily Grace Lewis said: “The rental costs and housing availability are a problem.

“Private landlords should not be able to buy up council built high rises and charge ridiculous amount of rent for them”

Graffiti and litter

Argus readers think the problem of litter needs to be addressed

The state of the city’s streets and the deterioration of landmarks such as Madeira Terrace were widely mentioned.

Pam Mitchell said: “As someone who was born here, I have to say the litter (so many masks), the graffiti, the lovely buildings we're losing without caring (Madeira Terraces) and the awful buildings going up in their place.”

Brighton-born Deanne Herriott said: “The litter, the graffiti and the lack of care for the city and its beautiful architecture.”

Lydni Molyneux said graffiti is the biggest problem facing Brighton because it makes the city look “filthy and grimy”.

She wrote: “Remove the tagging of the drug dealers off every surface around the city. It’s disgraceful and scruffy. Our city has been neglected.”

Shaun Leeves believes more attention needs to be paid to some of the city’s most loved spots.

He wrote: “The arches left until they are irreplaceable, every railing from the lagoon to the Concorde needs work.

“Cut the lawns so that they can be enjoyed as they used to be. Just work to maintain this great place.”

It comes after Brighton and Hove City Council introduced new parking charges with costs rising across the city.

Fiona Anderson said: “The process of applying for a parking permit is the next problem that needs addressing.”

Reader George Galyer said: “Bring the car parking prices down and make it easier for motorists to get in and out the place.

“These are the people spending money and keeping business and the tourist industry in the city afloat.”
