THE brother of a man killed by a police car is holding another protest calling for the officer driving to be suspended while the investigation continues.

Arthur Holscher-Ermert died after being hit by the black BMW on Saturday, April 30, near Bramber Avenue in Peacehaven.

The 27-year-old, driving an Audi, had been briefly pursued by a different police car. He got out of the Audi and was crossing the road, where he was hit by the unmarked police vehicle heading westbound.

Sussex Police confirmed the officer driving it, a police constable, had “not undertaken duties since the incident and has been placed on restricted duties that are not public-facing" after concerns were raised by Arthur's family.

But older brother Karl Holscher-Ermert, 30, wants any officers involved with the incident to be suspended from all duties by the force while the investigation is ongoing.

He told The Argus there would be another protest outside Sussex Police HQ in Lewes on Saturday, adding: “We’re now three weeks since he died, now it’s about the fact we haven’t got Arthur’s body back, nobody has been suspended.

“That is in Sussex Police’s hands, not the IOPC [Independent Office for Police Conduct]. How can they potentially be driving round our community after being involved in the incident? For all we know as the friends and family, they could be driving past us in the town.

“We want the officers suspended while the investigation is going on. It’s not about pay or anything, suspend them with full pay. It’s about morality and human decency.

"We're not closer to having the funeral but for the time being we need to carry on."

Sussex Police requested a private meeting with Karl on Monday to offer their “deepest sympathies” and “reassure” the family.

Assistant Chief Constable Simon Dobinson said: "I have wanted to personally meet with Karl to offer my deepest sympathies to him and his family for Arthur’s death and to reassure them that we are doing all we can to support the independent investigation.

"We continue to provide assistance to the IOPC, who have independence in regard to the investigation and who remain in contact with the family.

"The driver of the car is being investigated for death by dangerous driving and for potential gross misconduct at this early stage of the investigation.

“The officer has been placed on restricted duties that are not public-facing, this means that they will not be working in the community, not patrolling on foot or by car. This restriction will be kept under review. Suspension under police regulations was considered and was not authorised at this time.

"While there has been much speculation it is vital that all of the facts of the case can be fully, fairly and objectively investigated by the IOPC. That is the purpose of an independent investigation.

"We are providing every assistance to the IOPC to ensure a thorough investigation and for the family to receive the answers they need. We would ask the public to allow for the investigation to take its course."

The peaceful protest will start from the Tesco superstore in Brooks Road, Lewes, at 1pm on Saturday.
