A CAR park has reopened with new security measures after concern from residents about antisocial behaviour.

Brighton and Hove City Council said the upgrades to Chapel Street car park make it a “brighter, safer and cleaner place”.

It was formerly known as High Street Car Park and is beneath St James’s House in Kemp Town. It has space for 81 small and medium sized vehicles.

The extensive refurbishment followed concerns from residents about “serious antisocial behaviour” in the area, a council spokeswoman said.

The upgrades include new card-only pay machines, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) with new door readers and new CCTV equipment for security, which is monitored from the council's transport control centre.

The car park, which reopened on Tuesday, has new gates and pedestrian doors for secure access along with new LED lighting.

It was formally a pay and display but is now a "pay on foot" car park. Customers will  take a ticket on entry and pay at one of the machines when leaving.

The entry and exit ramps have been switched, with the entry now in Chapel Street, hence the name change.
