NEIGHBOURS are against plans to create a beer garden at a central Brighton pub.

Laine Pub Company wants to block up a garage door entrance and replace the toilet block to create the beer garden in Prince’s Street at The Actors, formerly the Marlborough Hotel.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning committee members are advised to approve planning permission when the application goes before them on Wednesday.

Councillors approved a similar application to remove the garage and create a beer garden in 2013, which was partially implemented and then reversed.

Five neighbours directly affected by the scheme have objected, raising concerns about noise, invasion of privacy and light spill.

The Kingscliffe Society objected, describing the beer garden as unsuitable as people’s homes surround it.

The society’s letter said: “The blank wall to the street would be out of character with the mix of residential properties.

“Adjoining residents would suffer a loss of privacy and peaceable enjoyment.

“There would be an increase of noise and disturbance generally.”

An objector, whose details are removed on the council’s website, said: “I already have to put up with screaming individuals at the front of The Actors through to the early hours.

“To then have to hear more noise coming from the back is just unacceptable.”

A condition on the application restricts the pub garden use to between noon and 10pm every day.

The application by Lewis and Co Planning for Laine Pub Company director Peter Bennett, 57, said: “The site is an unlisted public house building within the East Cliff Conservation Area in central Brighton.

“The creation of the beer garden will enhance the customer offer of the public house without significantly increasing the capacity of the premises.”

The planning committee meets at Hove Town Hall at 2pm on Wednesday. The meeting is webcast on the council website.
