THE Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex has officially launched the Queen’s Green Canopy in the county.

Andrew Blackman planted a commemorative oak tree at the Heathfield Agricultural Show at the end of May.

In advance of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last weekend, he encouraged everyone to make plans to plant a tree in the autumn to celebrate Her Majesty’s seventy years of service to the nation.

Mr Blackman said: “I am delighted to be here at the Heathfield Show on its 75th anniversary to launch the Queen’s Green Canopy in East Sussex, and to plant an English oak.

“The Queen’s Green Canopy is a fantastic tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, and it is simple to take part by planting trees in your own community spaces and gardens. I urge everyone to visit the website, spread the word, and get involved.”

Many of the Queen’s Green Canopy team who are working to encourage tree planting in the county this year were at the Show including the Marquess of Abergavenny, who chairs the East Sussex Working Group.

Lord Abergavenny said: “We’ve had a fantastic day meeting lots of people keen to plant trees for the Jubilee year.

“The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is an excellent environmental initiative, as well as a wonderful way to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.

“I am keen for us to inspire everyone to plant a tree this coming autumn, when trees are dormant and can be planted without so much disturbance.”

Lord Abergavenny also emphasised the importance of the national QGC map where everyone is encouraged to upload a photo of their newly planted Jubilee trees, to create a full picture of what we are all achieving together.

Everyone from individuals to groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and organisations is encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season which will begin again in October, through to the end of this Jubilee year.
