TWO teenagers had to be rescued from the sea after suffering from hypothermia near the pier.

The 15-year-olds were reported in distress in the water near Brighton Palace Pier and were struggling to make it back to shore.

The pair had drifted with the tide to the Albion Groyne on Brighton beach, which creates strong fixed currents and is “tricky to swim against”, according to the council seafront team.

“They clung on to the stanchions of the pier and our on-duty tower lifeguard Jake deployed two guards into the water,” a spokesman said.

“Both casualties were suffering from hypothermia, superficial cuts and grazes from the sharp barnacles on the pier.”

One of the teenagers was also showing signs that he had swallowed water.

Both were taken into the back of an ambulance for further treatment after the incident, which happened on Monday.

“Thanks to our friends in South East Coast Ambulance Service for their support and the coastguard,” the council seafront team spokesman added.

“Please don’t enter the water and swim near large groynes. They create hazardous conditions.

“Swim between the red and yellow flags. Well done to all guards involved.”
