Perching Manor Farm near Devil's Dyke holding open day

Perching Manor Farm in Edburton Road, Fulking, near Devil’s Dyke, will show people how and where their food products are grown, including wheat, barley and oilseed rape.

The open farm event tomorrow, Sunday, June 12, will have tractor and trailer rides, a farm machinery display, sheepdog display, and talks about beekeeping and wild birds.

There will also be a BBQ and refreshments and people are encouraged to bring a picnic rug and enjoy the scenery of the Downs.

The farm is holding an open day tomorrow 11am-3pm

It is part of a national scheme by an organisation called Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) where people can visit participating farms around the country.

David Ellin, farm manager, said: “It’s our first open day, it’s exciting to welcome people to the farm who might never have been on one. We can show them something completely different that we do day-in, day-out.

“We hope people can learn something from the day about how we work. We will be showing people all the different seeds we grow on the farm.”

While the open farm is free, the farm is asking people to register for tickets online so it knows how many people to expect.

David added: “For the children we also have someone coming to do a forest school, although there is a small charge for that.

“We have a guy on the farm who sells honey from the bees on the farm. We also have Henfield Bird Watch as we do a lot in terms of what birds on the farm.

“Moving forward, a lot of what we do is about working with the environment and the sustainability side of it.

“It’s a chance for people to come and ask questions about what we do.”
