AN INTERNATIONAL jazz artist will return to her spiritual home of Brighton this year for an evening of smooth tunes.

Joanna Eden has worked with the biggest names in the business, including pop megastar Sam Smith, who she taught for a decade and who once said “she’s the reason I sing”.

Despite growing up in Lincolnshire, Joanna has close family ties with Brighton, where her family are from – and is set to play The Verdict jazz club in Kemp Town on Saturday, June 18.

Her father is invited, though Joanna is cautious about it.

“My dad is a bass player of 60 years and is strangely proud that several venues where he played in the Sixties caught fire not long after he left the building, including the Pavilion and the Bedford Hotel,” she said.

"All my family are Brightonians and have always reminded me what a cool and happening place it is - compared to 'boring old' Lincolnshire where I grew up.

"My Uncle Chris still lives in Brighton and is a rock and roll DJ with an enviable collection of vintage records. My music's probably a bit jazzy for him, but I hope he'll come.”

The singer has had success the world over. Time Magazine called her “the UK’s answer to Norah Jones”, while Dame Cleo Laine said she was “bloody marvellous”.

Joanna has a string of UK shows lined up for the summer at some of jazz world’s most exciting festivals, and is fresh off a night at Le Club de la Soie in Paris.

She tours with an impressive backing band of Tristan Banks on drums, bassist Andrés Lafone and Guille Hill on guitar.

And with an extensive back catalogue mixed with an unrivalled passion and drive, her night at Brighton’s Verdict looks set to be a gorgeous night of cool jazz, in a wonderfully intimate setting.

Tickets for Joanna Eden’s show are available via her website.
