A MAN has died and an investigation is underway following a garage fire.

Police and fire crews were called to an address in Bowmans Drive in Battle around 9.45pm yesterday evening following reports of a fire coming from a garage.

A 71-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation has begun to establish the circumstances of the incident, but a police spokesman said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

Pictures from the scene show several police vehicles, as well as a fire engine and an ambulance response vehicle.

The spokesman said: “Police were called to assist the fire service at an address in Bowmans Drive, Battle on Saturday, June 11 following reports of a fire coming from a garage.

“Officers arrived at around 9.45pm and a 71-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“Investigations are ongoing alongside the fire service to establish the full circumstances of the situation, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “We were called at 21.41 last night to reports of smoke from a garage in Bowmans Drive. A fire investigation will take place today.”
