A DRIVER has suffered serious injuries in a “serious road traffic collision” on the A27.

Emergency services were called to a collision involving two vehicles on the A27 in Polegate, with the road closed eastbound from the Polegate Services to the A22 roundabout.

The incident is understood to have taken place shortly before 11.45am at the roundabout connecting with the A22 Golden Jubilee Way.

The driver of one of the vehicles is being treated for serious injuries. It is understood that an air ambulance has attended the scene of the crash.

Congestion is affecting surrounding routes through Polegate, Hailsham, Pevensey and Stone Cross as traffic is diverted through Eastbourne.

National Highways have described the incident as a “serious collision”, with investigations taking place.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours.

Enquiries are still ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident.
