A SEASIDE town is set to welcome guests and visitors from across the UK as its first-ever kite festival this weekend.

Organised by Cove UK’s Seal Bay Resort in conjunction with Bognor Regis Kite Fliers, the special weekend in Selsey, near Chichester, will feature stunning kite flying displays from international teams and UK champions.

There will also be synchronised flying and LED kites lighting up the night sky.

The Seal Bay Resort Kite Festival hopes to replicate the success of the Bognor Kite Festival, which was first held in October 2015 and has now become an annual event attracting thousands of people to the area each year.

Among the attractions will be a ten-metre inflatable Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as a 30-metre-long blue whale flying alongside an eight-metre-long version that is the size of a newly-born calf.

The Seal Bay team have also organised a teddy bear parachute drop, encouraging children to select their bravest teddy bear to be strapped in for a jump and win a bravery certificate for their owner.

Graham Lewis, commercial director of Cove UK, said: “This is an eagerly anticipated weekend as we look forward to the Seal Bay Resort Kite Festival, the first festival of its kind to be held in Selsey.

“We’ve had unbelievable interest from guests across the UK, some of whom are staying with us for the first time and who are travelling to the area, especially for the festival.

“There are many different events taking place across the weekend, but we’re especially looking forward to the teddy bear parachute drop and to seeing the huge inflatable kits, including blue whales and Sonic the Hedgehog, floating over our skies.

“It is great that people want to come to Selsey and the local area will benefit, particularly economically, from the buzz the festival will bring to the town.

“Local people are very welcome to come join with us this weekend or at future occasions we are planning later this year.”

The free event takes place from 10.30am to 10.30pm tomorrow and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday.
