VISITORS to the i360 got a special spectacular view of sunrise on the longest day of the year.

A group of people donned harnesses and climbed on the top of the viewing tower in Brighton at 4am this morning to catch a glimpse of sunrise from high above the city to mark the summer solstice.

People at the attraction were seen looking out to the horizon and pointing as the sun rose across the city and across Sussex.

The summer solstice marks the date with the longest period of sunlight and the shortest night of the year, when the northern hemisphere reaches its maximum tilt towards the sun.

The opposite takes place in December, when the winter solstice brings the shortest day of the year.

Elsewhere in the UK, thousands greeted the sun with cheers as it rose over Stonehenge this morning.

Some 6,000 people observed the spectacle at the neolithic monument in Wiltshire, marking the first time members of the public have been allowed to attend in person due to the pandemic.
