A BRIGHTON brewery is raising money to support a local campaign to save starling murmurations.
Brighton Bier is raising the funds throughout the summer to support the Save Our Starlings project at their new beach shop opposite the West Pier.
The Brighton Bier Beach Shop will have tables at the weekends until 6.30pm from Saturday, July 3 for people to enjoy the view and a beer with ten per cent of on sales being donated to the Save Our Starlings campaign.
Stephen Whitehurst, Brighton Bier Director, said: “Ever since my children were little, strolling down to the beach to watch the murmurations has been a delight.
“Like so many people, it was a treat during the lockdown; it’s a truly breathtaking spectacle and I think it's incredibly sad to think future generations might not be able to witness one of nature’s great spectacles.
“We hope to therefore be able to raise a lot of money this summer for the nesting box scheme and support Steve and Louise in their tremendously important work.
“We’re also very grateful to the Council and Brighton Police Licensing for allowing us to do this across the summer.”
Steve Geliot and Louise McCurdy from Save Our Starlings said: "We are delighted that Brighton Bier has offered to join us in showing some love to the starlings, and any money raised will go towards making more starling nest boxes.
“The campaign seeks to protect and restore our diminishing starling murmuration over Brighton Palace Pier.
“This includes working with the City Council to ban harmful agricultural chemicals on our City Downland Estate, allowing insects - starling's main food source - to recover, as well as installing hundreds of starling nest boxes in suitable sites across the city.
“Nationally we are losing starlings at a staggering rate of 150 an hour - a very upsetting feature of the Biodiversity Crisis we have created.
“But we can turn this around if we simply stop being destructive and make peace with nature.”
The Brighton Bier Beach Shop is located opposite the West Pier in the Kings Road Arches directly to the east of the i360, and open daily from 11am.
