EIGHT fire engines are in attendance at a large fire which broke out in a house this afternoon.

Firefighters from West Sussex Fire and Rescue (WSFRS), as well as Hampshire are at the scene in Piggery Hall Lane, West Wittering, near Chichester.

The fire broke out at 4.45pm and crews are making “steady progress” at putting it out.

It is unclear if there are any injuries at this stage.

The fire started in the roof space of the house.

A WSFRS spokesman said: “We have a fire at a residential property in West Wittering near Chichester at Piggery Hall Lane.

“We are still in attendance, we were called at 4.45pm today.

“There are eight appliances in attendance including assistance from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

“It is still ongoing but the latest update is that steady progress is being made.

"The incident was scaled back at 7.59pm, four crews remain at the scene.

"The fire started in the roof space."

Crews from Chichester, Bognor, Littlehampton, Storrington, Billingshurst, Worthing and East Preston are in attendance.
