NEW wards for Kemp Town and Whitehawk have been proposed in the final recommendations from a review of the city’s ward boundaries.

The Local Government Boundary Commission has put forward a new set of boundaries ahead of local elections in Brighton and Hove next year, aiming to ensure that councillors represent roughly the same number of people.

The latest proposals by the independent organisation follow on from draft boundaries drawn up in February.

Proposed changes to the draft borders include a new Kemp Town ward, following strong support from local people, a split of the proposed Hove Park and Westdene ward, and a ward encompassing Whitehawk and Brighton Marina.

The Commission is encouraging residents and local organisations from across the city to share their thoughts about the proposals, with a six-week consultation lasting until mid-August.

Professor Colin Mellors, chairman of the commission, said: “We want people in Brighton and Hove to help us.

“We have drawn up these final proposals for new wards in areas of Brighton and Hove. We want to make sure these new electoral arrangements reflect communities.

“We also want them to be easy to understand and convenient for local people.

“Residents and local organisations have already helped us in refining our earlier proposals. Now we would like them to let us know whether they agree with our proposals before we take final decisions.”

The changes also see slight alterations to some of the city’s other wards, with Westdene and Patcham merging, and Hollingbury forming a new ward with Carden.

Almost every ward across the city has seen some changes under the plans, which will come into effect in time for local elections being held across Brighton and Hove in May 2023.

The Commission has a dedicated section on its website where people can see the detail of the proposals and comment on the names of wards, their boundaries and the number of councillors per ward. https://consultation.lgbce.org.uk/node/29490
