THE A23 is closed both ways following a horror crash involving a car and a lorry.

The incident happened around 5.15am this morning southbound near Bolney.

Police have closed both sides of the A23 from Pease Pottage and do not know when it will reopen.

A car can be seen overturned on the inside lane, while the lorry is partly off the road.

Tarpaulin has also been put on the road.

Police, fire and ambulance crews are at the scene.

Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash this morning.

A spokesman said: “Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision between a car and lorry on the A23 near Bolney around 5.15am on Sunday, July 10.

“The road is currently closed in both directions from Junction 11 (Pease Pottage) while police, fire and ambulance services attend the scene.

“It is likely the road is going to be closed in both directions for a significant time and it is not yet known when the road will re-open.

“Anyone who was planning to use the road is being asked to take an alternative route.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage of it is asked to report it to police by emailing it to collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk or call 101 quoting Operation Riverhill.”

There are currently severe delays northbound on the A23 with traffic diverting via the Cowfold turn off.

Police do not anticipate the road to reopen before 1pm.
