A MAN has died after driving his car the wrong way down the A23 and crashing into a lorry.

The incident happened on the A23 near Bolney at around 5.15am this morning.

The black Nissan Qashqai was travelling towards oncoming traffic southbound along the carriageway before crashing into the articulated lorry.

The car was left overturned on the inside lane, while the lorry was partly off the road.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended but the driver, a 23-year-old man from Cuckfield, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next-of-kin have been informed.

Police are appealing for witnesses following the crash.

The force are keen to speak with the occupants of a dark coloured Ford who stopped at the scene but left prior to police arrival.

Both sides of the A23 were closed for more than 10 hours between Pease Pottage and Warninglid to allow for investigation and recovery work.
