A TEENAGER is fundraising in order to pay for gender reassignment surgery.

Billy Carr, from Brighton, changed from boys to girls PE classes when at school and came out as transsexual two years ago, beginning hormone replacement therapy.

The 19-year-old says that she “always knew” there was something different about herself.

Billy said: “I’ve known I’m trans for as long as I can remember really, I knew I was different, I’ve always felt different.

“I’m so happy I’ve got such a supportive group around me.”

The Argus:

Billy studies songwriting in London, she also releases and performs her own music around Brighton, singing about her experience as a transwoman.

She added: “I love living in Brighton, it’s a much more welcoming place for someone who is trans.

“I perform at a lot of gay bars so I’ve come to know a lot of people around here.”

The 19-year-old has now made the decision to go through with gender reassignment surgery.

The Argus:

She said: “I’ve always felt more womanly. In secondary school I got teachers to change me over to the girls’ PE class, I’ve always felt this womanly side.

“It’s kind of like the final piece of the puzzle to get to where I want to be and where I’ve always envisioned myself.”

After researching MTF Bottom Surgery, to create female genitalia, Billy found that it could take up to ten years on the NHS.

She feels that the impact of not having the operation for such a long period could be “detrimental” to her mental health.

The Argus:

For that reason she has launched a Go Fund Me page to raise the money she needs for a private surgery, totalling at £21, 000.

Billy said: “Even before I came out I had looked into it all, I knew it would be a long, long process.

“This way I would be able to have the surgery between six to eight months time, which is a much better time frame.”

On the page she said: “I know that £21,000 is an extortionate amount of money that will take a long long while to accumulate but that would cover the entire cost of the surgery as well as aftercare.

The Argus:

“I will also be saving up and contributing whenever I can.

“I am so so grateful for any donation at all as I know how hard it is to earn a living in this day and age.”
