COASTGUARDS were called to help search for six missing people in less than two hours.

RNLI Eastbourne were first tasked with helping search the shoreline near Beachy Head for a missing person at about 11pm on Monday, July 11.

The volunteer crew was requested to launch their inshore lifeboat and assist police and local coastguards.

“After a thorough search of the area, the missing person was located safe and well,” a RNLI Eastbourne spokesman said.

The inshore lifeboat and crew members were subsequently stood down and returned to the station.

Less than two hours later, the RNLI Eastbourne volunteer crew were paged following reports of five people having been spotted entering the sea near Eastbourne Pier.

They were requested to launch the inshore lifeboat and assist police at about 12.50am on Tuesday, July 12.

“Once on scene and with a search of the area, it was confirmed the casualties had made it to shore,” the spokesman said.

“With no further persons in the water, the lifeboat was stood down, returned to station, refuelled and made ready for service.”
