A GROUP of travellers have been spotted at two public parks.

Arun Police said they are responding to reports of “unauthorised encampments” in Langmead Field and Angmering Recreation Ground in Decoy Drive.

“Our officers, working in liaison with local authorities, have attended,” a police spokesman said.

“We are currently engaging with the communities.”

A large group of travellers were recently moved by police from Preston Park in Brighton.

At least 30 caravans, who arrived at the park on Friday, July 15, were served a Section 61 notice to vacate the land on Sunday, July 17.

A section 61 notice gives police the power to order a group to leave once a landowner has taken reasonable steps to remove them.

The weekly park run in Preston Park was cancelled on Saturday after organisers expressed safety concerns about the travellers.

Brighton and Hove City Council councillor Dawn Barnett called for the council do to more to tackle unauthorised camps, stating such groups should be directed to the travellers' site in Patcham.

“They shouldn’t be allowed on any public park - it’s a park for residents in the city who pay council tax,” she said.

“Residents shouldn’t have to put up with this. They do not want to be mucked around by travellers.

“The council has a soft touch. They say Brighton and Hove is a City of Sanctuary - but who for? Certainly not the residents.”

Last week, a large group of caravans were spotted in Woodland Park, off Station Road, Angmering.

West Sussex County Council previously said that 24 caravans and motorhomes were parked in Goring Greensward.
