A MAN is telling the story of being his wife’s carer... through five holes of crazy golf.

Gordon Watts has been his wife’s primary carer for most of her adult life due to her complex mental illness.

Now he and his artist daughter, Lisa Watts, have designed and built an indoor crazy golf course to explore the “profound effects” providing care has had on the family.

My Crazy Family Golf was intended to bring Gordon and Lisa closer together.

"I have been wanting to collaborate and make something with my dad since I was a teenager,” said Lisa.

“I hope people enjoy the ups and downs of playing crazy golf and the story behind the making of it.”

Each hole includes audio recordings of the family made during Gordon’s years of caring, and “act as playful, colourful, sculptural objects in their own right, incorporating elements such as domestic carpet and household objects”.

The course, which is at Fabrica gallery in Duke Street, Brighton, is entirely homemade, including the golf clubs and score cards.

My Crazy Family Golf is accompanied by a personal film, titled Dad Cares, which documents Gordon and Lisa’s relationship as artistic collaborators – a partnership that came naturally given Gordon’s background in building work.

The exhibition is open now until August 28.
