ONCE again the issue of dirty and unkempt toilets in Brighton and Hove has been raised (The Argus, July 19).

This is an ongoing saga which appears time and time again, but nothing seems to be done to improve the situation.

Recently I had occasion to visit Lyme Regis while en route to Cornwall. Having parked the car in the street for FREE, I walked towards the seafront. This took me through beautifully kept gardens and reminded me of the days

in Brighton when we had a very successful parks and gardens department and equally beautiful gardens.

Once on the seafront it was noticeable how clean it was, virtually no litter to be seen, then I spotted the rubbish bins and plenty of them at the top of the beach and also on the promenade.

Being of a certain age I tend to use toilets more frequently than I used to. I came to a uni-sex toilet, on entering I found it was spotlessly clean, there was an area with a number of washbasins, mirrors etc and then about a dozen cubicles. The one I occupied was also absolutely spotless. The whole building was clearly well maintained and regularly cleaned.

Perhaps our hapless council, instead of discussing world affairs on the council agenda and spending large amounts of money on white elephants (the i360), could organise a day trip to Lyme Regis and see how a much smaller town with a considerably smaller population spends its money to make the place attractive to residents and visitors.
