SCHOOLCHILDREN have combined football with science as part of a new learning scheme.

Year 5 and 6 pupils at Bevendean Primary in Brighton took part in a football STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) session.

It was organised by Albion In The Community (AITC), the official charity of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, in partnership with American Express, and was part of the Learn Together programme of education.

The one-day workshop was delivered in the school by AITC qualified teaching staff and was designed to give children an understanding of digital skills for the future and an introduction to key enterprise skills such as financial literacy, creativity, communication and teamwork.

Eight American Express volunteers helped the youngsters understand the objectives and rules of each activity and supported them through a series of tasks.

These included learning how to use programmable Sphero robots and navigating these around a football-themed course using block coding.

The pupils, who are aged nine to 11, also created and constructed a football theme park, using pre-created planning templates and attractions within a set budget.

They then presented their ideas to the Amex volunteers for feedback.
