SO BRIGHTON and Hove City Council is bidding for £9.5 million from the government’s Levelling Up Fund to help pay for the restoration of the Madeira Terrace.

Its bid is "for restoration of the eastern 865 metres of the Madeira Terraces, the Victorian Shelter Hall and the 200-year-old biodiverse green wall".

The work will "improve access to the area for the deprived communities on the Bristol Estate and Whitehawk while improving the significant blight of the derelict Grade II* listed terrace".

The terrace would not be derelict if the council had carried out basic routine maintenance and they actually ordered the "green wall" to be hacked down.

Why should taxpayers pay for the council's deficiencies?

The Argus has reported on numerous occasions over the years that the money was in the budget (including public fundraising) and work would commence. Why are they claiming this money?
