A FIRE behind a Co-op which was spreading to flats above is believed to have been started deliberately.

The blaze started in a wheelie bin near the loading area behind the shop in Field Place Parade, Goring.

A window frame was partially melted by the flames.

The fire happened on Sunday lunchtime.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 1.40pm on Sunday to reports of a fire involving a bin on Field Place Parade.

“Joint Fire Control mobilised one fire engine from Worthing Fire Station to the scene.

"They found a fire involving a domestic wheelie bin which was spreading to a nearby building.

"They quickly extinguished the fire using one high pressure hose reel.

“The fire is believed to have been started deliberately and investigations are ongoing.”

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said officers were made aware of the fire at about 2.30pm.

She said: "The fire was extinguished, and officers attended to carry out further enquiries.

"These are ongoing, and anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact police online or by calling 101 quoting serial 771 of 24/07."
