A DOG had to be rescued by the RNLI and coastguard after falling nearly 400ft from a cliff.
Eastbourne lifeboat helped find and recover the dog and its owner, who had become trapped on the cliff
An RNLI spokesman said the dog had fallen nearly 400 feet and the distraught owner was “trying to recover it”.
The crew launched the inshore lifeboat at about 3.30pm on Wednesday.
A coastguard was lowered down the cliff face, recovered the injured dog and returned it to the owner on the beach.
“Due to the deteriorating sea conditions and the state of tide, helmsman Dean Parker made the decision to take everyone back to the inshore lifeboat station,” the spokesman added.
“Once back ashore, the owner, who was very cold and shocked, was cared for by lifeboat crew and the dog was taken to local vets by coastguard to be checked over and treated for any injuries.
“This was a very unfortunate accident, and we would urge people to be aware of the dangers whilst walking along the coastline with dogs.
“Always dial 999 and ask for the coastguard in situations like this.”
