A CHOREOGRAPHER has given a warm welcome to Pride headliner Christina Aguilera by performing the hit song “Dirrty” across the city.

Andrea Walker, founder of Brighton-based 201 Dance Company, brought a team of dancers together and hit the streets to perform a street dance routine to the 2002 track at well-known Brighton landmarks, including The Lanes, the Old Steine, and the beach.

The tribute is the third of its kind for Pride, with Kylie Minogue joining for a cameo in 2019 as she prepared to headline the festival in Preston Park.

Andrea said: “When Christina Aguilera was announced as a headline act for Brighton and Hove Pride, I knew I wanted 201 to do something special.

“We involved the whole community and got onboard the best dancers we knew, truly on a mission to live our best lives in a dance video that celebrates queerness, love and also her incredible career.

“Christina headlining Pride was exciting enough, but next month also marks the 20-year anniversary of “Dirrty”. I knew there was no other choice when it came to what song we’d be dancing to.”

She also said she is very excited to welcome Pride back to the city after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Andrea said: “In the past, these Pride dance videos have brought the whole of the Brighton dance community together.

“It was disheartening to not be able to create one for the past few years, so we really wanted to pull all the stops with this one.

“You could sense the energy in the rehearsal room was electric from the start. I hope that excitement comes across - we absolutely loved creating this year’s video.”

The final scene of the video includes over 60 dancers from the city’s dance community.

“Pride is all about inclusion, so I really wanted the final moments in the video to have dancers of all different backgrounds, styles and skills,” Andrea said.

201 Dance Company are returning to Edinburgh Fringe later this month with a new show, SAD BOOK, inspired by an award-winning novel by Michael Rosen.

Christina Aguilera will take to the main stage at the Pride festival in Preston Park tomorrow evening.
