For certain types who were enjoying the naive flourishes of youth in the late Nineties, Roni Size comes wrapped in a blanket of nostalgia.
Part of the reason why he's a musical antique for people too young to have one is the distinct possibility that the sound he pioneered will never be reborn - the term big beat feels as redundant as ballroom waltzing, and the earthy drum 'n' bass he excelled at has largely made way for more futuristic prototypes.
On the tenth anniversary of his transcendent New Forms album, the Bristol DJ and producer has acknowledged this by reissuing it in a new armour of modern studio wizardry, as well as embarking on a tour with most of the lead characters from his Reprazent crew who made the original happen.
Taking to the stage well after the witching hour, Dynamite MC's lead-voiced rapping reignited the tumultuous Railing, the much-loved Digital sent a heaving dancefloor into spasms, and resident Size diva Onallee's impassioned, soulful chords soared over Share The Fall.
Live double bass turned the flawless Brown Paper Bag into a spine-tingling drum 'n' bass odyssey, aided by a drummer oflung-busting stamina and Size's brooding technical supervision. The best thing is, he's back next month.
