FIVE people were taken to hospital including two by air ambulance following a crash involving two lorries and multiple cars on the A27.

The pile-up happened around 4.15pm yesterday westbound between the Fishbourne and Stockbridge Roundabouts, near Chichester.

Two air ambulances attended the scene at around 4.45pm and took two people to hospital with “possibly serious” injuries, according to Sussex Police.

While three more people were taken by road ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road, Brighton, with more minor injuries. There were no life-threatening injuries.

A Sussex Police spokesman said at the time: "Drivers are being advised to avoid the A27 area around Chichester till further notice on Monday afternoon and evening, August 8.

"Diversions are in place after a serious collision between several goods vehicles and cars at the A27 Stockbridge Roundabout at 4.15pm and there have been some injuries.

"Emergency services are at the scene and the road is likely to closed in both directions for some time.

"Drivers are thanked for their patience and understanding."

One car could be seen overturned, while another suffered serious damage to its front.

Two lorries, one carrying a mobile home, were also involved in the crash.

A white van could also be seen behind the lorries.

There were miles of queues on both sides of the carriageway due to the road closures.

The road was reopened westbound by around 7.30pm.

Two fire engines were in attendance from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS).

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service also provided support. 

A spokeswoman for WSFRS said: "At 4.21pm we were called to a road traffic collision on the A27 Eastbound, between Fishbourne and Stockbridge.

"The road is expected to be closed for some time, so we would ask the public to avoid the area for the time being."
