A YOUNG sportsman endured a marathon squash event to raise hundreds of pounds for an animal  rescue centre.

Arthur Robertson, eight, fastened his goggles and got stuck into 11 gruelling hours of squash, cheered on from the sidelines by family and friends.

He played 84 games against 21 opponents at Southdown sports club in Lewes on July 23 – walking away with blister, a bruise on his nose, and in need of a good night’s sleep.

Arthur smashed his £500 target and raised £870 overall for Raystede animal rescue centre in Ringmer.

The total includes £126 from a bake sale at Arthur's school, Lewes Old Grammar.

“I am so proud I raised all this money for Raystede,” he said.

“I love animals and it’s expensive to look after them. Thank you to everyone who supported me, I feel really lucky to have so many friends.”

Arthur’s family suggested he set his sights on a six-hour target, but he insisted on going for more – while his sister and number one fan, Ophelia, cheered him on non-stop from the side of the court.
