ARGUS readers have put forward their suggestions for a name for a new hospital building which is set to open to patients in the new year.

The new £483 million building at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton will be home to over 30 wards and departments and be kitted with state-of-the-art facilities.

All the building needs is a name - with the NHS leaving the task to the public.

A popular suggestion was made by Sandra Vincent, who came up with naming the building after Louisa Martindale, a physician, surgeon, suffragette and writer who worked in Brighton.

Sandra said: “She was the first female member of the Council of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

“She was fierce and controversial and also contributed to the city as a magistrate, prison commissioner and member of the National Council of Women.”

Sussex doctor Octavia Wilberforce was also put forward.

She pursued a medical career despite opposition from her parents, treating Virginia Woolf’s mental illness in the final years of her life and running a women’s shelter near Henfield.

Other “Brighton heroes” suggested include Tony Bloom, owner and chairman of Brighton and Hove Albion, and Fatboy Slim.

While one Facebook user, Stephen Harvey, suggested naming the new building after “one of Britain’s most famous people” - Katie Price.

He said: “I’m sure Katie would be delighted to cut the ribbon at the official opening ceremony and meet some of the staff for selfies and thank them for their work.”

Another reader, Ann-Marie Newman, suggested naming the building after the late Barbara Lynes, a matron she worked for when Ann started working at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

“She knew every patient,” she said.

Inspired by the seaview some patients will receive in some of the new wards, David Warner suggested the Sea of Tranquillity Building.

Despite a warning that Hospital McHospital Face would not be considered, one reader found a way to get around it with Hospy McHospitalface.

Suggestions should be no more than three words long, relevant to Sussex as a whole, and meaningful to the broad range of people that the hospital serves.

If you can come up with a better suggestion, people have until August 28 to put forward their ideas at uhsussex.nhs.uk/shareaname.

The name for the new building will be unveiled towards the end of the year and will open its doors to its first patients in February.
