FIREFIGHTERS have been at two wildfires with smoke plumes visible from “several miles away”.
Crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) responded to two fires in Selsfield Road, Turners Hill, near Crawley around 2pm this afternoon.
Around 40 acres of grassland was destroyed by one of the fires.
A spokesman for WSFRS said: “We are currently dealing with two field fires at Selsfield Road, Turners Hill.
“The fires are causing large smoke plumes which can be seen from several miles away.
“If nearby, please close your doors and windows.”
Both fires were put out by 3.15pm and WSFRS confirmed that it was standing down crews.
A spokesman added: “All crews are now being stood down and crews from East Grinstead will be retuning later on to carry out re-inspections.
“In the current conditions it’s vital that we’re made aware of fires as soon as they happen, so a huge thank you to everyone who called 999.”
There was a wildfire near Falmer Road, Woodingdean as well as a fire in Forest Row near East Grinstead this afternoon.
