With reference to Jane Weaver's comments regarding communal bins (Letters, February 18), as a resident of Brunswick Square for more than 20 years, I would like to point out that there is a general misconception that everyone living in Brunswick Square and Terrace is against them. This is not the case.

Firstly, these bins would mean that our elderly and disabled residents would not have to drag heavy black bags down vertiginous steps to put them in basement storage areas.

Secondly, our hard-working binmen would not have to throw bags, unavoidably splitting some of them, to street level. A consequence of this is that our streets are strewn with detritus which attracts vermin and seagulls.

Thirdly, rats have become a problem in the basement bin areas of Brunswick. This nuisance would be obviated by communal bins.

Fourthly, these communal bins would be emptied more regularly.

Finally, wherever communal bins have been introduced, they have been a great success and have considerably reduced the amount of rubbish on the streets.

It has to be admitted that these bins would take up a few parking spaces but they are no more ugly (and far more useful) than many of the cars and vans which, in my view, spoil our enjoyment of this beautiful area.

Bring on the bins, I say.
