POLICE have increased neighbourhood patrols amid a “devastating impact” caused by antisocial behaviour.

Officers from Lewes Police have stepped up their presence on Denton Island in Newhaven in an attempt to combat the issue.

Police said the increased presence follows a number of reports of late-night antisocial behaviour made by the public over the weekend.

“Left untackled, we know that antisocial behaviour can have a devastating impact on local communities and individuals,” a police spokesman said.

“Did you know, we have a number of dedicated operations currently running to address issues around antisocial behaviour.”

Operation Downsway includes enforcement and educational patrols and stop checks with the aim of raising awareness of driving offences.

“These patrols include regular speed checks for driver distraction offences, like mobile phone use, to address road safety concerns and keep the roads of Sussex safe for users,” the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, Operation Blitz is a weekly antisocial behaviour targeting patrol, which sees dedicated officers take to the streets in areas that have seen an increase in, and an increase in reporting of, antisocial behaviour and antisocial driving.

The spokesman encouraged residents to continue reporting antisocial behaviour.

“Residents of Lewes and Seahaven can call 07989188960 between 4pm and 10pm to report antisocial behaviour directly to officers on patrol across the district,” the spokesman added.

Earlier this week, officers from Brighton and Hove Police stepped up their presence in and around Western Road, Western Terrace and Norfolk Square amid increased reports of antisocial behaviour.

Last month, police also carried out seafront foot patrols in St Aubyns, Hove, and increased foot patrols in and around Linden Park in Littlehampton.
