TESCO customers have been left huddling inside after a superstore flooded with rainwater.

Water began to seep into the shop in Jane Murray Way in Burgess Hill after the main foyer was buffeted by the elements.

One customer said she had only popped in for a few minutes but very quickly the store was filled with inches of water.

Emma Charlesworth said: “It started to go in through the doors and it had become completely under water.

“Within a couple of minutes the flood water started to come down from the car park.

“They had opened the fire doors to try and sweep water out.”

Ms Charlesworth, 35, said that she had only been in the store for a few minutes, and that when she went in the rain was only spitting.

By the time she came out, the torrential rain meant customers had to huddle inside in order to avoid being drenched.

The flood comes as an amber weather warning has been issued for the entire county, with rain and thunderstorms blighting the area.

The Met Office said: “Flooding of homes and businesses is likely and could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”

After a weekend of heatwaves, the change in weather has caused chaos across the county.

Storms have caused numerous problems across the region, including a flooded road in Haywards Heath.
