A WOMAN is braving a barefoot walk over hot coals for the hospice that looked after her mother.
Tracie Milnes, 53, from Brighton, is taking part in memory of her mum Linda, who was cared for by the Martlets before she died aged 49 in 2000.
The scary challenge will be held at The Ladies Mile pub in Mackie Avenue, Patcham, Brighton, on October 9.
Martlets Hospice, which is temporarily based at the nearby Maycroft Manor Care Home, is asking that entrants work towards a collective fundraising target of £12,500. People can register for £25 to enter.
She said: “I am taking part in the fire walk in memory of my mum Linda. I spent a few months of my life in the hospice caring for her alongside the nursing team.
“As I was young and stubborn, I wanted to do everything for her. With the support of the staff, we shared some beautiful moments – bathing, spending time in the garden and talking about everything, from her life to EastEnders.
“While Mum was there, I even got the chance to host a birthday party for my daughter. I can’t thank them enough for the support they gave me and my mum, so I couldn’t wait to take the chance to give something back to this special place.
“A firewalk felt a little different to the usual sort of fundraising event and I can’t wait to take part. I’m also a bit nervous as it’s a challenging charity event… I usually do quite a few charity events but keep them within my comfort zone.
“Thanks to the support of my friends and family, I’ve already reached my target, but I’m aiming to raise even more if I can. I’d encourage anyone thinking of taking on a challenge to sign up and do the walk alongside me too.”
Tracie has already beaten her £200 target, raising £350 so far for the Martlets.
Hayley Kenward, from Martlets fundraising team, said: "We are looking for brave supporters like Tracie who can take on the shortest, hottest and bravest walk of the year in memory of a loved one or as a personal challenge.
"Taking on a personal challenge can help you to remember and help make precious memories. You'll also be helping us raise money to support other people affected by terminal illness, ensuring they make the most of the time they have.
"You don't need any experience to do a firewalk, as we will give you training ahead of the event, alongside lots of support to reach your fundraising goal."
All funds raised will go towards helping the hospice in its palliative care for people with terminal illnesses.
