A NEW survey has revealed that Brighton is the most stressful city to move house in.

From financial difficulties to mental health impacts, the data from a survey conducted by Legal and General looked at the impact on homebuyers in Brighton and across the country.

The survey revealed that moving house in Brighton was more stressful than any other city, as 70 per cent of homebuyers experienced increased stress levels when moving.

Moving house was found to put a strain on finances - almost a third (30 per cent) of homebuyers in Brighton went over budget for their most recent property, causing 30 per cent to worry about their financial security.

Other key findings included:

  • Homebuyers in Brighton face significant mental health struggles as 39 per cent experienced anxiety when moving
  • 43 per cent argued with their partner during their most recent move
  • 22 per cent of homebuyers in Brighton found it difficult to raise a deposit
  • Homebuyers in Brighton paid an average of £1,072 over budget for their most recent property
  • 43 per cent dread not having enough money to cover additional expenses when moving home

But, despite the stressors involved, the survey found that a majority (83 per cent) of people in Brighton would consider moving again.

However, many said they would ensure they are more prepared – 35 per cent would factor in more time for the moving process, and 30 per cent would save more money than just the deposit.

Chief marketing officer and at Legal and General retail, Paula Llewellyn said: “There’s no shortage of households considering moving across the UK, but it’s clear it’s still an incredibly stressful life event, especially due to the financial strain of the process.

“An overwhelming 58 per cent of homebuyers polled said their most recent property cost more than they budgeted for, while 40 per cent were concerned about not having enough money to cover costs.

"Almost a third of respondents said in retrospect they’d want to understand the complexity of the process before moving.”
