PASSENGERS travelling to and from Gatwick Airport have experienced flight delays and cancellations due to “poor weather conditions”.

Dozens of easyJet, Wizz Air and British Airways flights were delayed, with several cancelled leading to frustration for holidaymakers on Wednesday.

Many of the services due to depart were pushed back from the early afternoon into the evening, causing disruption for those leaving or heading back home.

Gatwick has since confirmed that just over 60 flights due to depart were cancelled as a result of weather conditions across much of France and Spain, which meant inbound flights were unable to arrive.

Some passengers took to Twitter to say they had had “no information” from airlines as they waited to see if their journey would take place.

One easyJet passenger wrote to the airline: “So, after waiting in Gatwick North terminal for six hours, you cancel the flight to Rhodes.

“Can't rebook through the app, no flights, now giving an error and won't even let me try.

“No one here knows what's going on. You have ruined our first holiday in two years.”

Another Tweeted Gatwick saying: “We have now been stuck on the runway for over two hours and no information is being given.”

The airport first announced the possible delays and cancellations on Wednesday at 4.55pm

Thunderstorms, rain and wind hit England on Wednesday morning, which moved South East into central and Southern Europe.

The Met Office warned that heavy showers – of 30 to 50mm of rain, and in excess of 100mm in a few hours in areas where “storms are slow moving” – would cause disruptions.

In response to the complaints a spokeswoman for Gatwick said: "Air traffic control restrictions are currently in place across the South of England and parts of Europe due to poor weather conditions.

"This will unfortunately cause delays and cancellations to some flights today."
