A UNION targeted a staunch Conservative constituency with its new campaign to drive a change in workers’ rights.
Advertisement vans with Unite union’s “The Economy Isn’t Working” slogan have been seen in Crawley for the last two Saturdays.
It is a response to “inaction” from politicians and aims to unify workers and bring about a wage increase.
“Our economy isn’t working for workers, only for corporate Britain and its rich backers,” said Unite’s general secretary, Sharon Graham.
“It’s time for workers and communities to fight back. It’s time for us to build a movement for real change based on a unity of the workplace with local communities - popular working class power.”
The union’s campaign will target “heartland communities” and will “drive the political agenda as opposed to commenting on it”.
Crawley has had a Tory MP in Henry Smith since 2010 - winning by 8,360 votes in the 2019 General Election.
The union said profits in Britain’s top companies are up by 47 per cent, while it is predicted that workers’ real wages “could experience the biggest fall in 100 years”.
“This situation cannot stand any longer without persistent, permanent challenge,” it said.
“Only a rebirth of the trade union movement which becomes the lifeblood of local communities can help drive that change.”
Other towns and cities including Glasgow and Grimsby were also included in the launch.
