A MAN has been pronounced dead after a van crashed off the road.

Emergency services were called to reports of a crash on Seaford Road in Newhaven at around 8.40am this morning - no other vehicles were involved.

The 54-year-old man, who was the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have said that his next of kin have been informed.

The road was closed for several hours while teams worked to retrieve the van from overgrowth next to the A259.

The Argus:

Drivers were diverted from A26, onto A27 and through Alfriston and Litlington back onto the A259 at Friston causing long delays.

The stretch of the A259 has now been reopened and traffic is returning to normal.
