PEOPLE have been left outraged by an "unauthorised encampment" of caravans parked on the seafront.

Sussex Police said they are "monitoring the situation" at Hove Lawns, amid anger from those living nearby.

The Argus has previously reported on groups of travellers parking on the area of lawn next to the Peace Statue.

Nearby residents have raised concerns, with one telling the Argus "this is a big deal now".

"Sussex Police is aware of an unauthorised encampment on public land at Hove Lawns," a force spokesman said.

"Officers have engaged with the landowners, Brighton and Hove City Council, as well as the group, and are monitoring the situation.

"Sussex Police recognises concerns raised by the public and neighbourhood policing officers are continuing to monitor the situation and providing a visible presence in the area."

Earlier this month, a number of caravans were seen parked at the seafront.

Around four campervans and a number of other vehicles were seen at Hove Lawns, with a deckchair and a tent close by.

This came only a couple of weeks after another group were moved on from the area, with travellers also sighted at Preston Park last month.

At the time, a Hove resident, who did not want to be named, said he was “disgusted” by the caravans.

The latest encampment comes as the world-famous Zippos Circus sets up on Hove Lawns today, staying until September 5.

Zippos Circus is now making use of a space nearby as it kicks off the six-day event at 7pm this evening.

Circus founder Martin "Zippo" Burton, said he “cannot wait” to be back, and looks forward to giving audiences a “packed suitcase of fun and adventure with our new show Bon Voyage”.

Punters can expect an action packed show, including the motorbike Globe of Death from the Brazilian Lucius Team, fast juggling and whip cracking from Czech Republic star Toni, contortion from Mongolia, and aerial antics from the Irish Garcia Duo.

Tickets for tonight’s show are £9 across all ages, increasing tomorrow to £17 and £13 for under-14s. Children aged two and under go free.
