A STATUE of King George IV has been hidden from view by scaffolding to undergo cleaning.

Scaffolding surrounded the statue in Church Street, Brighton, earlier this month but work to clean the statue has only just begun due to resource shortages at a specialist contractor.

Work to clean the statue will begin this week and is set to take a week to complete.

In a post on Twitter, Brighton and Hove City Council leader Phelim Mac Cafferty said it was “good to see the Prince Regent getting a well-deserved clean”.

Unveiled in 1828, the statue was designed by Sir Francis Chantrey and features a nine-foot bronze figure of King George IV stands on top a ten-foot granite pedestal.

The listed statue was originally constructed in the Old Steine but was moved to its current location near the Royal Pavilion in 1922 to allow for the erection of the War Memorial.

The Royal Pavilion served as a seaside retreat for the Prince Regent and later used by William IV and Queen Victoria.
