A new version of £40 million plans to redevelop a sixth-form college has gone on display.
Architects have revealed their ambitious proposals for Varndean College in Surrenden Road, Brighton.
The college says it wants to create world-class facilities.
The proposals include a controversial plan to demolish all existing buildings, including the historic 1930s facade and quadrangles at the front entrance to the school which the college had originally hoped to preserve.
Principal Phil Harlands said: "We tried very hard to keep the facade in the plans. It was something I was very keen to do but ultimately the cost would have been too high."
He said the architects felt it would have been difficult to make efficient use of the land available on the college site while working around the facade.
The new buildings will be funded by the Learning and Skills Council.
Mr Harlands said they would be two storeys, lower than those currently on site, causing less visual obstruction for people living around the college.
He added that a focus on sustainable design featured throughout the plans. A new atrium has been proposed to replace the existing quadrangles, with a roof to harness solar and wind power which would automatically adjust to monitor the conditions.
It will have learning spaces designed for the range of subjects and courses run by the college.
Mr Harlands said: "It will provide accommodation that is truly fit for purpose, not just for now but for the medium and long term."
The entrance to the college would still face south across the Surrenden campus but firm plans for the facade have not been drawn up.
Mr Harlands said he wanted the surrounding community to contribute ideas for how to make it a striking piece of architecture fit to replace the existing front.
Selma Montford, from the Preston and Old Patcham conservation society, said the group would oppose the plans.
She said: "I have not seen the proposals yet but we are opposed to the complete demolition. We think that facade which faces across the valley is very important to the area."
Withdean ward councillor Pat Drake said: "We have got to be open minded about how it will affect the people around it, the students of the future who will use it and the city as a whole."
Mr Harlands will be available to show visitors the plans and lead them on tours of the college from today until Friday, from 10am to 6pm.
Two evening exhibitions will be staged at the college tomorrow and Wednesday, from 6.30pm.
