Play It By Ear has had a cracking innings at Audio, consistently delivering forward-thinking line-ups.
Band of the night were openers Hatcham Social, a deeply peculiar three-piece in bowl cuts and cardigans, seemingly with no interest whatsoever in the traditional practices of being in a band and, er,playing songs.
Their material was dirge-like, awkward and skewed but there was something alluring about their total indifference and they left a lasting impression on the proceedings, like a deep troublesome bruise.
Headliners XX Teens were also out to confound and their frontman remained static and expressionless behind sunglasses.
The studied cool and grubby avant garage was largely convincing up to the point at which a lyric sheet was produced for a stream of consciousness-style rant How To Avoid A Terrorist Attack, which somewhat shattered the carefully engineered cool.
