A NEW mural is to be unveiled at a historic velodrome.
Artists Rebecca Angel and Dawn East will reveal the new piece of artwork at Brighton's Preston Park Velodrome today at noon.
The duo said they created the vibrant mural to reflect the “dynamic, multifaceted and inclusive” space of the velodrome.
The project involved the community, with the two artists providing free on-site art workshops that were an “intrinsic and exciting” part of the design process using participation from groups that enjoy the velodrome as well as people who use the park.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for the local community to connect with their surroundings and be a part of creating a permanent piece of art which reflects the way in which the community and sports clubs interact with the velodrome and immediate area as well as celebrating the history of the oldest track and oldest Brighton Cricket club,” said Ms East.
“The result is a high-quality, site-specific mural which will allows local residents to see some of their work on display in a public space.
“Preston Park is a vibrant park that is full of character. The mural reflects this unique sense of place.”
Ms East said the mural was inspired by the imagery and graphics associated with cycling, cricket, triathlons and other track sports.
From pitch to track to spectators to park users and on to the surrounding houses, the artists picked up on the idea of the pitch being "enveloped" by the track and track by park and the "layers and lines of interaction between individuals and sports".
Ms Angel and Ms East are an arts partnership with over 30 years combined experience working on public and private arts projects for clients.
