This undated view of Brighton shows the entrance to the Aquarium, now the Sea Life Centre.

Designed in the 1870s by Eugenius Birch, who was also responsible for the West Pier, it was then the largest aquarium in the world.

The big banner strung between the two entrance kiosks merely indicated there was a licensed restaurant there.

In front of the entrance was the Aquarium roundabout, then much bigger than today's mini construction.

It featured ornamental lamp posts and was covered with grass.

Alterations to the roundabout in the Seventies increased the capacity of what is now one of the busiest junctions in Sussex.
